If your business has been considering going solar, the clock is officially ticking. Ontario’s Save on Energy Retrofit Program is cutting its commercial solar incentive by 10% at the end of this month — and waiting could cost your project thousands of dollars.

What’s Changing?

Right now, Ontario businesses can receive $860 per kilowatt (AC) for rooftop solar installations through the Save on Energy Retrofit Program. On June 30, 2026, that rate drops to $770/kW AC — a reduction of $90 per kilowatt.

For a 100 kW rooftop system, that’s a difference of $9,000 in incentive money. For larger commercial installations, the gap grows even wider.

The incentive applies to rooftop-mounted systems over 10 kW AC and covers commercial, industrial, institutional, multi-residential, agricultural, and municipal buildings across Ontario. One important note: ground-mount systems do not qualify — this is exclusively for rooftop installations.

The good news? Applications submitted before June 30, 2026 are honoured at the current $860/kW AC rate, subject to review and approval. That means you still have a window — but it’s closing fast.

Why Does This Matter for Your Business?

Commercial solar isn’t just an environmental decision — it’s a financial one. Rising electricity rates in Ontario mean businesses with high energy consumption are feeling the squeeze more than ever. A rooftop solar system reduces your reliance on the grid, locks in predictable energy costs, and generates a return on investment that compounds over the 20–25 year life of the system.

Layering that with a strong upfront incentive makes the math even more compelling. Once the rate drops, projects that were financially attractive may need to be reassessed. There’s no indication the rate will go back up — the next program update isn’t expected until Fall 2026.

The Bottom Line: June 30 Is Your Deadline

If your building qualifies — commercial, industrial, institutional, agricultural, or multi-residential — and you’ve been sitting on the fence, this is the moment to act. The higher incentive rate won’t be there on July 1.
